Helen E. Dragas is a two-term member and past rector of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors. As a university leader, she has advanced many fundamental activities – long-range strategic and financial planning, greater accountability, and transparency in decision-making – in an effort to ensure that U.Va’s tradition of affordable excellence remains accessible to all talented students from throughout Virginia. Ms. Dragas also serves as a trustee of Norfolk Academy, an independent co-educational day school and the oldest secondary school in Virginia.
Since 1996, Ms. Dragas has led Dragas Management Corp as President and Chief Executive Officer. Under her leadership, company assets have increased more than 50-fold. She has won numerous awards for quality and for her commitment to the community.
Ms. Dragas was twice selected for the Lee Evans Award for Business Management Excellence by the National Association of Homebuilders and Builder Magazine in 1999 and 2009. Builder Magazine named The Dragas Companies “America’s Best Builder” in 2009. In addition, the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities honored her with its Humanitarian Award, “First Citizen of Virginia Beach.”
ForKids recently recognized her and the Dragas Foundation for work to find sustainable solutions to homelessness in Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach. Her extensive volunteer and board experience spans eight organizations including the Hampton Roads Partnership, Virginia Beach Library Foundation, College Foundation Board, and the University of Virginia Alumni Association Board of Managers.
A native of Virginia Beach, She earned a B.A. in Foreign Affairs and Economics.
